NMSU to host state forum on cover crops, soil health

NMSU will host a viewing location for the opening session of the National Cover Crops and Soil Health Conference Feb. 18, followed by a local discussion. Area producers, faculty, students and the public are invited to attend.

The event will be held from 7:45 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Gerald Thomas Hall Room 297, located at 940 College Drive on the NMSU Las Cruces campus.

The Cover Crop and Soil Health Forum will feature a live video stream from the opening session of the National Cover Crops and Soil Health Conference. Howard Buffett and USDA Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will kick off the Omaha-based national event, followed by a national panel of leading soil health farmers who will provide their perspectives on the promise, opportunities and challenges of improving soil health.

The national forum and subsequent local meeting will provide the latest information on cover crops and soil health practices and give participants the opportunity to discuss the role of advancing soil health and the use of cover crops in New Mexico.

Kulbhushan Grover and Mark Uchanski, both from the NMSU Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, will be on hand to answer questions and lead a brief discussion on cover crop research projects currently underway in southern New Mexico following the presentation.

Off-campus visitors will need to obtain a parking permit; free E-permits can be obtained online from the NMSU Parking Office at https://ict-iisweb.nmsu.edu/auxadmin/ParkingForms/ePermit.aspx. To contact the NMSU Parking office, call 575-646-1839 or email parking@nmsu.edu.
