NMSU students may download Microsoft Office for free

Current students of New Mexico State University can now download Office 365 Pro Plus for free on up to five computers and five mobile devices as part of the Microsoft Corporation?s Student Advantage program.

?I think it?s going to ease the load on the computer labs,? ICT technical adviser Brenda Purcell said. ?Now students can do their work at home, outside of the lab. The timing was wonderful now that the Jacobs Hall computer labs have closed.?

More than 35,000 educational institutions worldwide are participating in the program, which aims to provide students with access to a full version of Microsoft Office. The package contains updated versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook for both PC and Mac operating systems. The PC package also includes OneNote, Access, Publisher, Lync and InfoPath. The software is not supported on Google Chromebooks.

According to a 2013 IDC study, proficiency in Microsoft Office is the third most marketable skill to employers in high-growth, high-wage occupations. Furthermore, proficiency in PowerPoint and Word are singled out as the 11th most sought-after skill, and 13th, respectively.

?When students go out into the workforce, they?ll have the tools and know how to use them,? Purcell said.

The software will deactivate 45 days after a student graduates or stops taking courses at the university. Faculty and staff may download Office 365 only if they are taking classes as a student. They will also be deactivated 45 days after their coursework is completed. The Student Advantage program does not affect the Office 365 products already available on my.nmsu.edu.

After uninstalling any previous versions of Microsoft Office and restarting their computers, students can download the software by logging into their my.nmsu.edu accounts and clicking the blue icon, which takes them to the Microsoft 365 email. From there, the package can be accessed by clicking on Office 365 settings, under the gear icon in the upper right corner.
