Webb selected as CEMRC director

New Mexico State University has selected Joel Webb as director of the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center in Carlsbad, Jay Jordan, dean of the university's College of Engineering, announced.

Joel Webb has been named director of the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center in Carlsbad. The center is a division of New Mexico State University's College of Engineering.

Webb has served as the center's manager of program development since 1997. He joined the center in 1995, with the primary responsibility of developing and managing its Internal Dosimetry Program and related instrumentation programs.

The Carlsbad Monitoring and Research Center was established in 1991 to measure environmental radioactivity in the Carlsbad area and to monitor radioactivity to anticipate and respond to environmental, health or scientific issues. It also carries out other research on environmental radioactivity. The center is a division of New Mexico State's College of Engineering.

Under Webb's direction, the program developed the center's lung and whole body counter, used to measure radioactive materials deposited in the human body, known as in vivo radiobioassay. The counter is being used to conduct radiobioassay measurements of Waste Isolation Pilot Plant workers. In addition, it has been used to take base line measurements of Carlsbad residents, to determine the amount of radiation they might have absorbed from other sources prior to the opening of the WIPP site.

Webb succeeds Marsha Conley, who had served as director of the center since 1996. Conley retired from the center in July 2001.

Webb received his bachelor's degree in range ecology and a master's in radiological health sciences, both from Colorado State University. He is certified as a health physicist by the American Academy of Health Physics. Prior to joining the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center, he worked at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site.
