NMSU Valencia County Extension hosts vertebrate pest control workshop

LOS LUNAS ? Unwanted vertebrate pests impact all walks of life, from homeowners dealing with mice and rats, to agricultural producers dealing with gophers ? and no one wants to have a close encounter with a skunk. The big question is, how does a person control these critters?

New Mexico State University Valencia County Cooperative Extension Service and NMSU?s Agricultural Science Center at Los Lunas are hosting a vertebrate pest control workshop from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, April 11, at the science center, 1036 Miller Road, in Los Lunas.

?We get numerous calls asking what can be done about the gophers, because of the damage they do to the crops and irrigation canals,? said Newt McCarty, Valencia County Extension agricultural agent. ?Gophers are just one of the pests causing problems for people. There are multiple ways of fighting the various pests.?

During the free workshop, Sam Smallidge, NMSU Extension wildlife specialists, will discuss methods to control unwanted vertebrate pests.
