New Mexico State University presents annual Student Art Exhibition

The New Mexico State University Annual Student Art Exhibition will run from Saturday, March 9, until Sunday, April 7, at the University Art Gallery. An opening reception will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, March 8.


ibition has been an annual event for more than 20 years. Approximately 75 students contributed artwork including photography, graphic design, paintings, drawings, mixed-media, ceramics, sculpture, prints and metals and jewelry.

William Flores, New Mexico State University provost, will present 35 cash and prize awards and nine art department scholarships at the opening reception.

William Gilbert, a ceramics professor at the University of New Mexico, is this year's juror for the exhibit and will select the winners. Gilbert is an internationally exhibited multi-media artist whose work ranges from traditional ceramic to multi-media installations.

He is a widely recognized expert on traditional Native American ceramics and has been the curator for numerous exhibitions of Mata Ortiz art.

Gilbert will give a lecture titled "Land Art of the American West" at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in Williams Hall Room 212. Gilbert will discuss the art program at the University of New Mexico and the effort it makes to get students out of the classroom and into the field to visit various sites in the Southwest for artistic inspiration. He will also discuss his own work and the jurying process for the exhibition.

Donors for the exhibit include the New Mexico State University College of Arts and Sciences, La Posta Restaurant, The Potter's Guild, the New Mexico State University graphic design program, The Friends of the University Art Gallery Board of Trustees, the Fountain Theater and Gamblin Oil Paints.
