NMSU Dona Ana Cooperative Extension Service to host workshop on selecting health insurance

The New Mexico State University Dona Ana Cooperative Extensive Service will offer a Smart Choice Health Insurance Literacy Workshop, a free consumer education seminar on how to select health insurance, at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Dona Ana Cooperative Extensive Service office, 530 N. Church St.

?Choosing a health insurance can sometimes feel intimidating or overwhelming,? said Karim Martinez, county program director and home economist. ?This workshop will help people feel more confident about making those choices for themselves and their families.?

To register for this free workshop, call 575-525-6649 or email Martinez at karmarti@nmsu.edu.

This two-hour program will help individuals analyze their health care needs, compare insurance plans and apply the knowledge to make a smart health insurance choice based on their affordability. Participants will receive a consumer workbook and will learn tools that will help individuals feel confident in making health insurance choices. Information about accessing the new Marketplace (Health Insurance Exchange) options will be reviewed.

NMSU Cooperative Extension Service Faculty Kelly Knight, Otero County extension home economist, and Sonja Koukel, extension health specialist, who received specialized training, are leading the workshop in guiding consumers in making good health and financial decisions about insurance.

Smart Choice Health Insurance was developed through the leadership of the University of Maryland Extension and the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension. More information can be found at http://extension.umd.edu/insure.
