RASEM Squared spring robot project involves students in science and math

The Regional Alliance for Science, Engineering and Mathematics Squared (RASEM Squared) will hold its Spring Robot Project from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17.


rpose of the Robot Project is to introduce 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students with disabilities to science, engineering, mathematics and technology through hands-on learning experiences. RASEM hopes the spring project will motivate these students to become interested in science and technology, said Ed Misquez, the program's associate director.

The Robot Project will consist of 10 teams of three students and a mentor. Each team will use kits to assemble robots with sensors that make them capable of avoiding obstacles or following a line drawn on the floor. The teams will include students with special needs and students without them, Misquez said.

In addition, members of the Fly the Rainbow hot air balloon club from High Rolls, N.M., will give free rides in their balloons to the children participating in the project, as well as to those who participated in two similar sessions last year, he added.

"Weather permitting, they will give the rides Saturday morning, but if it's windy we'll postpone it until Sunday morning," he said.

The project is being coordinated by electrical engineering students Jerry Wightman and Dale Harrell, Misquez added.

RASEM Squared was established to increase the numbers of students with disabilities who take courses and pursue careers in science, engineering, math and technology. It is primarily funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and is administered by William C. McCarthy, associate dean of New Mexico State's College of Engineering.
