NMSU speaker to discuss Latina/os WWII soldiering experiences

New Mexico State University?s Center for Latin American and Border Studies will present a talk by Ben Olguin, associate professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio. The event will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Nason House, 1070 University Ave.

Olguin, who is also the assistant director for National Scholarships and Fellowships at UTSA?s Honors College, will discuss ?Latina/os and World War II.?

Along with Maggie Rivas Rodriguez, Olguin is co-editor of ?Latina/os and WWII: Mobility, Agency and Ideology,? the first book-length study of Latina and Latino experiences in World War II, which includes a wide spectrum from Cuban Americans, Spanish Americans, Mexican Americans and the Afro-Latino experience.

His talk will be based on several memoirs and theatrical productions by and about Latina/o WWII soldiers, and also will examine those in relation to memoirs, literature,and film by and about Latina/o soldiers in other eras.

The talk is co-sponsored by Students Affairs and Enrollment Management, and will be followed by a question and answer session.
