New Mexico State University to host biology symposium

New Mexico State University's 16th Annual Biology Department Symposium will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in Wooten Hall, Room 105.

posium will feature presentations by undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and faculty in the biological sciences, such as biochemistry, fisheries and wildlife sciences.

"Once a year, it's nice to get together and talk about current research," said Michele Nishiguchi, assistant professor of biology and one of this year's symposium organizers. "It encourages more interaction among the biological sciences and students get practice in making formal presentations in their area of expertise."

The event is free and open to the public.

Sponsors for this year's symposium include Durango Bagels, COAS Books, Silver Assets, Milagro Coffee House, Galeria Azul, Way Out West, Albertsons on El Paseo, Carmona's Salon and Day Spa, and World Gym.

The annual symposium was created 16 years ago by Laura Huenneke, head of the biology department at New Mexico State, "to inform the public and other departments at the university about what is happening in the biological sciences," said Nishiguchi.
