New Mexico State University Choirs present "An Evening with Beethoven"

New Mexico State University Choirs will present "An Evening with Beethoven," the final concert of the 2002-2003 season, at 8 p.m. Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26, in the Music Center Recital Hall.

"Choral Fantasy" will feature Laura Spitzer, music faculty member, on piano. A solo quartet from the choir will join in this performance.

"Mass in C Major," written for orchestra, chorus and solo quartet, was Beethoven's first Mass setting. Music professor Jerry Ann Alt will direct the chamber orchestra and Sylvia Blair of the El Paso and Las Cruces symphonies will serve as concert master.

Members of the orchestra include New Mexico State music faculty members Lisa VanWinkle, Nancy Joy, Fred Bugbee and Michael Staehle. The quartet includes mezzo soprano Kirstin Chavez, soprano Tammy Jenkins, bass Robert Chumbley and Raul Hernandez, a tenor with the Metropolitan Opera. Chavez, who has sung the role of "Carmen" at the Lincoln Center in New York, and Jenkins, who sang several years with the San Francisco Opera, are both former New Mexico State choir students.

"We hope the Las Cruces audience will be out in full force to hear this amazing quartet of singers. It's not often that we hear singers from the Met, and the New York City and San Francisco operas," Alt said.

Tickets for the concert are $3 for students and reserved tickets are available for $8, $10 and $12. For more information call (505) 646-1993.
