NMSU hosts viewing party for TEDxMahattan Food Talk

Why does organic food cost more? How can we change the food system? What will it take to end hunger in the United States?

TEDxManhattan 2015 brings together the food experts and innovators for a one-day event in New York City to raise public awareness about the critical issues facing the food system while fostering collaboration within the food movement.

New Mexico State University is joining the spirit of TED Talks by hosting a viewing party for the fifth annual TEDxManhattan ?Changing the Way We Eat? webcast. See a list of all the speakers for TEDxManhattan "Changing the Way We Eat" at tedxmanhattan.org/event.

The talks will be streamed live at NMSU from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Breland Hall, Room 189 on the NMSU campus. The event is open to all interested NMSU students and faculty, as well as the Las Cruces public.

?NMSU is one of the designated viewing sites,? said Lois Stanford, associate anthropology professor in NMSU?s College of Arts and Sciences. ?There is room for about 40 people and I want to encourage Las Cruces residents who are interested to come and view the talks.?

Students from Stanford?s Food and Culture class are hosting the viewing. The event includes 16 speakers throughout the day and will have lunch catered by Chipotle.

Simultaneous Spanish translation of the talk also will be available at the Las Cruces viewing. For questions about the NMSU viewing party, contact Lois Stanford at lstanfor@nmsu.edu.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast event in nearby Whistler. The annual TEDGlobal conference was held in October 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
