NMSU rodeo remains on top in spring opener

New Mexico State University men?s rodeo team took the top spot this weekend at the Cochise College Rodeo in Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

Taking first place in more than half of the events, NMSU beat out the competition by 90 points.

?The Fort Huachuca rodeo is always a good one because we are able to go on base and give the military and their families a good show. I am very proud of the team,? NMSU rodeo coach Jim Brown said. ?Their preparation and competitiveness always pay off at the end of each rodeo.?

This was the first spring semester rodeo for the team.

Tyke Kipp received the All-Around title for excellence in the arena.

?Again, our men?s team has started a solid spring season with wins all across the board and Tyke is at the front of the team leading the charge for a regional men?s team championship, as well as a trip to the College National Finals Rodeo in June,? Brown said.

Riders taking the top spots were Paden Underwood in bareback; Josh Davison, Tyke Kipp, Casey Wood and Ryan McCauley in saddlebronc; and Shelby Montano and Zoe Billings in breakaway.

Tyke Kipp took first in steer wrestling. NaLynn Cline placed fifth in barrel racing, while Garrett Hendrix and Jed Davison took leads in tie-down; Savannah Montero and Shelby Montano placed fourth and fifth in goat tying.

In team roping, winners Russell Van Soelen and Benjie Sam, Omar Ramirez and Bobby Flores, and Lucas McKenzie and Sheldon Church led the bracket.

The next rodeo will be on March 15-16 in Florence, Arizona.
