NMSU to host ?Education Beyond Borders: Tearing Down Walls? symposium

Las Cruces residents and New Mexico State University students, staff and faculty will have a unique opportunity to network, engage and learn about multicultural education during the ?Education Beyond Borders: Tearing Down Walls? symposium next week.

The free symposium, which is hosted by the College of Education Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Critical Multicultural Educators Graduate Student Organization, will be from 2-7 p.m. April 17 in room 104 of O?Donnell Hall, 1220 Stewart Street on the NMSU campus.

This year?s symposium will feature keynote speaker Loui Reyes, dean of NMSU?s Graduate School. Reyes became the school?s dean last month.

The symposium will focus on deconstructing and reconstructing the role of education as seen through the eyes of local and international professors and students at NMSU, said Armando Altamirano, Curriculum and Instruction graduate assistant and director of the Critical Multicultural Educators Organization.

?These doctoral students and professors will share their wisdom, insights and experiences about Education Beyond Borders, and the different interpretations we can bring about to the words ?education? and ?borders,?? Altamirano said.

The symposium will also feature a showing of the documentary, ?To Light a Candle,? followed by a discussion panel.

Dinner will be provided.

Registration is not required for faculty and students. Others are encouraged to RSVP to Armando Altamirano at armandoa@nmsu.edu.
