NMSU to host 19th Annual Multicultural Research Symposium

An internationally known psychologist and academic, who is also the president-elect of the Association of Black Psychologists, will be the keynote speaker at this year?s Multicultural Research Symposium, hosted by the New Mexico State University College of Education?s Counseling and Educational Psychology Department.

The symposium featuring Kevin Washington will begin at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, with presentations by the department?s doctoral students. A reception and poster presentations will follow Washington?s speech, which begins at 6 p.m.

Washington has served as a behavioral consultant for Essence Magazine, Black Entertainment Television (BET) News and several national and international organizations. As a Fulbright-Hays scholar, Washington researched the impact of socializing institutions on the healing or restructuring of post-apartheid South Africa.

He has also conducted research in order to help people live life with ?power, purpose and passion,? and has founded Ubuntu psychotherapy, which advances a culturally sensitive modality for mental health counseling.
