Friday?s hooding ceremony celebrates research, doctoral degrees at NMSU

If you have never attended a university commencement ceremony, the attire might surprise you. The academic regalia of the graduates, faculty and university officials provides a rainbow of color often in a sea of black.

At the first-ever separate doctoral hooding ceremony at New Mexico State University, doctoral candidates will be hooded on stage by their faculty adviser. The color of hoods represents the different disciplines.

The spring 2015 doctoral hooding ceremony, which begins commencement festivities, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the Pan American Center.

?The hooding ceremony is in addition to and does not replace commencement,? said Loui Reyes, dean of the Graduate School. ?The ceremony is a special recognition for NMSU?s research and professional doctorate degree recipients.?

Reyes said he could recall the overwhelming joy he felt for his accomplishment as the hood was placed over his head when he earned a Ph.D. from NMSU in 1997.

?A long time ago, although it seems like yesterday, I too participated with the hooding ceremony,? he said. ?I recollect how excited I was when I arrived at the Pan American Center and became more excited when I saw my doctoral fellow.?

NMSU will honor 52 doctoral recipients this semester and following the formal ceremony, a reception will be held in the Pan American Center for doctoral candidates and guests.

The Pan American Center will open at 6 p.m. and doctoral candidates and guests are asked to arrive before 6:30 p.m. for line-up and seating. Parking and entrances for all attendees will be on the south side of the Pan American Center.
