?Receiving this award was such an honor for me because I know how much great work is being done by county Extension agents around the state,? Martinez said.

Martinez, an associate professor at NMSU, became the home economist for Doņa Ana County in 2004 and provides educational programs on health, nutrition, food safety, parenting and family resource management to county residents. She has also served as the program director for the Doņa Ana County Cooperative Extension Service Office since 2008.

She is a member of various community groups such as the Doņa Ana Diabetes Action Coalition, Doņa Ana County Food Protection Alliance, Healthy Kids Las Cruces Stakeholder Committee, NMSU?s College Assistance Migrant Program Advisory Council and the Interagency Council. She?s also an active member of several professional organizations, including the National Council on Family Relations and the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, and attends national conferences and participates in state organization activities.

?She is passionate about her job and loves working with people of all ages, income levels and ethnic groups,? said Esther Devall, head of the Family and Consumer Sciences Department in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. ?She is concerned about her clientele and always respectful of their needs and viewpoints. She is well respected by community members, colleagues and other professionals for her knowledge, humility and professionalism. She does an excellent job of representing NMSU.?

Devall nominated Martinez for the award.

?This is by far the best job I have ever had,? Martinez said. ?I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my border community by bringing Extension programs to diverse clientele, including Spanish-speaking audiences. I look forward to continuing to work for the people of Doņa Ana County to improve quality of life through Extension outreach efforts.?
