NMSU awarded NMAEE Energy Project of the Year for performance contract

New Mexico State University is set to receive the 2015 New Mexico Association of Energy Engineer?s Energy Project of the Year award during the association?s annual awards banquet Sept. 22 in Albuquerque.

Last year, NMSU entered into an energy performance contract with Ameresco, an energy services company. As of this summer, the university has seen about 17 percent in savings in the campus? electrical use, and about 25 percent in heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

Contract work is still being conducted, but NMSU Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing director Patrick Chavez has said he expects that the university?s project savings will meet or exceed the contract?s guaranteed 17 percent savings. He has also said that through June, the university has seen about $1.32 million in savings thanks to the contract.

?This award is due to the collaborative efforts of many individuals at various levels within the organization,? Chavez said.

Awards are scored based on two primary criteria based on overall impact, either related to size and complexity or potential for energy saved. NMAEE President Matthew Higgins said the NMSU energy performance contract meets both criteria and was also notable for being a landmark project for the state?s procurement direction toward energy savings performance contracts.

The awards banquet will feature a keynote speaker and dinner, and will take place at the Sandia Casino in Albuquerque.

NMAEE is a chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers, which seeks to promote the scientific and educational interests of those engaged in the energy industry and to foster action for sustainable development.
