NMSU to host ?Pops Under the Stars?

The Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra will host its ?Pops Under the Stars? concert from 8 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at New Mexico State University?s Presley Askew baseball field.

The concert hopes to act as a kickoff point for the fall season and bring awareness to the city?s symphony to new crowds.

?It?s really a world class symphony - we bring in a lot of wonderful guest artists from around the world,? symphony executive director Debra Medoff Marks said. ?Once you hear a seventy-piece orchestra playing music? I think people are going to be blown away at the sheer sound of it.?

The show will be a versatile introduction into the new season, beginning with the NMSU ROTC color guard, and recognition for each military branch. The first half of the concert will include patriotic tunes, baseball-themed music and a 70s music medley including songs from the Star Wars films. A Beatles medley will also be played, in anticipation of the ?Classical Mystery Tour: A Tribute to the Beatles? show set to be backed by the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra this January.

Following a short intermission, the symphony will continue with well-known Broadway tunes and a grand finale including the 1812 Overture and a fifteen minute fireworks show presented by Planet Fireworks, the company responsible for the city of Las Cruces firework displays.

During the performance, attendees will be able to purchase food and drinks. Options available include traditional stadium food, such as pizza, hot dogs and beef brisket nachos. Desserts such as snow cones and cotton candy will also be available, alongside drinks like beer, wine, soda and lemonade.

The event will be general admission, with prices at $10 for adults 18 and over, $5 for six to 17-year olds and free for children five and under. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and it is recommended to arrive early in order to secure a good seat. Tickets are selling quickly, so those interested are encouraged to call 575-646-3709 in order to pre-purchase and have the tickets already waiting for them at the entrance. They may also be purchased at the door.

?We want to bring a concert to the public at a very very low ticket price - maybe target some people that normally can?t afford the ticket price of a live concert,? Medoff Marks said. ?We really want to provide a wonderful community outreach concert that?s accessible to everyone in the city.?

With 58 years? worth of experience, the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra is planning an abundance of events during its upcoming season.

The Classics series taking place throughout the year features six concerts filled with classical repertoire. The series brings in special guests from all over the world to play alongside the local orchestra, and concerts take place Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
