NMSU to host Employee Appreciation Picnic Friday

The fall 2015 semester is in full swing at New Mexico State University, and later this week employees will have the opportunity to enjoy a free picnic lunch at the Horseshoe on the NMSU campus. Employee Council will host the annual Employee Appreciation Picnic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16.

All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. An open-air shuttle will be available. The shuttle will pick up faculty and staff at the northwest corner of Parking Lot 41, near Corbett Center.

NMSU?s Employee Council is an advisory board to the president and administration on issues concerning current employees and university retirees, and this year marks the fifth year the council has sponsored the picnic.

?The picnic represents one of those times during the year that many of us gather in one place for a singular purpose, which is important, on the Las Cruces campus,? said Greg Block, Employee Council chair and associate director of housing and residential life. ?One of our goals is to explore expanding this in some form to our other campuses in upcoming years.

?It allows for campus connections to flourish, for old friends and colleagues to sit, share food and talk, and it provides a nice break from the routine. It allows for interaction across divisions, departments and levels of the campus, and it celebrates NMSU employees,? he said.

Block said last year?s event was very well received, and Employee Council appreciated the kind comments from the NMSU community. He said the council strives to improve upon the picnic experience every year, and this year will feature a new menu and additional seating. Block also noted that the President?s office assists with funding for the picnic.

Employee Council typically convenes once a month, and meetings are open to all employees. The meetings also are available via a live webcast. Along with the annual picnic, Employee Council has hosted a pair of open forums for the NMSU community this semester on the staffing study and athletics.

Employee Council has a voting membership of 20 members, and its executive committee meets with the president on a regular basis. Employee Council members participate in more than 18 standing committees focused on the administration of university policies, initiatives and incentives.
