NMSU?s ?Tough Enough to Wear Pink? begins 2015 events

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month well under way, New Mexico State University?s annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign is kicking off.


A Girl Talk event will take place at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Corbett Center Auditorium. It will feature NMSU student and breast cancer survivor Lei Lani Nava, who was diagnosed with the disease in February of this year at the age of 25 and is now in full remission. Certified nurse practitioner and women?s health care provider Patty Chavana will also speak during that time. The event is presented by NMSU?s Panhellenic Council and the Campus Health Center.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, the Emma Jean Cervantes Memorial 5K/10K Run & Walk will take place at 8 a.m. at Hadley Hall. During the annual event, participants will circle the campus and all proceeds will benefit the TETWP campaign. To register, visit www.newmexicosportsonline.com.

Tuesday, Oct. 20, will be filled with pink events. The ASNMSU TETWP Student Dinner will take place at 5 p.m. in the Corbett Center Taos Cafeteria. NMSU vs. UTEP volleyball will take place at 7 p.m. on the northside of the NMSU Pan American Center. After the game, the NM State Luminaria Rememberance Ceremony & Kick-Off Event will take place at 8:30 p.m. in the same location.

Oct. 22 will host the TETWP ?Shop for the Cure? event between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the NMSU Pan American Center East Concourse. The Fashion Show Luncheon will take place between 11:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Pan American Center. Tickets are $45 per person non-reserved or $500 for a reserved table.

The ?Barbara Damron: Cancer?s Effect on Mental Health? talk will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Pan American Center?s Barbara Hubbard Room. Damron is New Mexico?s Secretary of Higher education and a former faculty member at University of New Mexico?s College of Nursing. The night will conclude with the Pink Night at the NMSU Activity Center Volleyball Tournament at 6 p.m.

The month?s events will culminate on Oct. 24, Homecoming day, with the ASNMSU Homecoming Parade taking place at 10 a.m. on University Avenue and a Homecoming Tailgate from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Pan American Center Practice Gym. Finally, the Aggies will take on Troy University at 6 p.m. at the Aggie Memorial Stadium.
