Summer sports camp helps kids develop skills for an active lifestyle

Children ages 5 to 12 can now register for one or both sessions of the Summer Sports Camp 2002 to be held at New Mexico State University. The camp is divided into two sessions, June 24 through July 12 and July 15 through Aug. 2.


gistrations, including a $50 deposit, must be received on or before Friday, May 24. All fees must be paid in full by Friday, June 7.

The purpose of the camp is to provide a sports development experience for boys and girls, said Griselda Fino, a certified athletic trainer and camp director. She said the camp will help the participants develop a wide variety of fundamental movement skills that will set a foundation for a lifetime enjoyment of sport and recreation activity.

Campers will participate in a variety of activities including softball, volleyball, badminton, football, basketball, floor hockey, ultimate Frisbee, swimming, lacrosse and cooperative games. An optional overnight camping trip in the Cloudcroft area is available for campers ages 9 to 12.

The camp is sponsored by the department of physical education, recreation and dance at New Mexico State. The staff is made up of professional physical educators, experienced counselors in a variety of sports and education majors from the university.

Both camp sessions are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost per child is $200 for the first session and $210 for the second session. There is a $25 charge for those participating in the overnight camping trip. Campers can register for both sessions for $380. There is a $15 discount for each additional camper within the same family. Camp staff will be available to supervise pre- and post-camp activities from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and from 3 to 5:30 p.m. for additional fees.
