taley, a senior from Las Cruces with majors in journalism and Spanish, was chosen for his work in print journalism and Basile Dalberto, a senior journalism major from Ciboure, France, was chosen for his work in broadcast journalism.

Forty of the nation's top student journalists and photojournalists will participate in the three-day seminar, which takes place one week prior to the Kentucky Derby.

The students will have the opportunity to observe and interact with professional sports writers, photographers and broadcast journalists as they prepare to cover the Kentucky Derby. They will also participate in all-day sports journalism workshops, allowing them to practice their craft against the backdrop of one of the nation's largest sporting events.

Staley is the sports editor for the Round Up, the student-run newspaper at New Mexico State, and will graduate in December. He plans to be a sports writer.

"I'm pretty excited to go to this," Staley said. "It seems like you get a lot of advice from professionals. I'll learn by example."

Dalberto is a sports anchor at KRWG-TV and will also graduate in December. He played college-level golf in Arizona for two and a half years and for a semester at New Mexico State, and said he may return to the sport once he graduates.

"My ultimate dream would be to anchor golf on TV," he said.

Dalberto said this trip will equip him with two tools -- the knowledge of what it takes to be a professional sports journalist and contacts with professionals in the field.

"James and I are both graduating in December, so making these contacts will be great for us," he said.
