Insurance exchange workshops offered by NMSU?s Dona Ana County Extension Office

This year?s open enrollment period for the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange ends Jan. 31. For help in navigating the ins and outs of the process, New Mexico State University?s Dona Ana County Cooperative Extension Service Office will host three separate workshops this month. The presentations are designed to help people feel more confident when choosing a health insurance plan on the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange.

Attendees can choose between the workshops scheduled for Jan. 15 at 6 p.m., Jan. 16 at 3 p.m. and Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. Each will be held at the Dona Ana County Cooperative Extension Service Office, 530 N. Church Street in Las Cruces.

?As a result of the Affordable Care Act, many people are signing up for health insurance plans, and that process can be confusing and overwhelming,? said Karim Martinez, an Extension home economist at the Dona Ana County Cooperative Extension Service Office. ?This presentation can reduce that stress by offering basic information about what to consider before choosing a plan and where to go for help enrolling.?

Martinez said the goals of the one-hour presentation are to understand how health insurance can help prevent large, unexpected health care expenses, to learn what to compare regarding cost and coverage and to learn what information to consider before selecting a plan.

The presentation, titled Smart Choice Basics, was developed by the University of Maryland and the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension Service.
