NMSU to host Northern Agriculture Day Feb. 18 in Espanola

ESPANOLA ? New Mexico State University will host the Northern Agriculture Day, a conference on a variety of agricultural subjects, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Santa Claran Hotel events center in Espanola.

?This year?s agriculture day is focusing on forage and crop production for the northern part of the state,? said Tory Hougland, NMSU Extension associate with the Northern Outreach Program. ?We have included a variety of information from forage and medicinal plants to home and community gardens.?

NMSU Extension specialists will present information about forage seed selection, controlling insects in crops, and techniques in home garden production. Other presentation topics will include traditional medicinal plants, community gardens and healthy soil.

Representatives of U.S. Department of Agriculture agencies will present updates on a variety of programs.

?The last Northern Agriculture Day was a successful event,? said Pat Naranjo of Santa Clara Pueblo. ?I look forward to this one and more in the future.?

The program is presented by NMSU?s Cooperative Extension Service?s Northern Outreach Project. Sponsors include Santa Clara Pueblo and NMSU?s Rural Agricultural Improvement and Public Affairs Project.

Registration is $50 per person, and scholarships are available upon request. Lunch will be provided. For more information, call Hougland at 505-927-8750 or Joseph Garcia at 505-927-9611.
