Summer Regional Exhibition to open May 30 at University Art Gallery

The opening reception for the inaugural Summer Regional Exhibition will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the New Mexico State University Art Gallery.


lery is located in Williams Hall near the intersection of Solano Drive and University Avenue.

The exhibition will highlight the work of 25 regional artists from New Mexico and El Paso. The work will include sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, metals, monoprints, mixed media, ceramics and artists' books.

Gallery Director Mary Anne Redding said she is delighted by the rich diversity of the exhibition's artwork. "I feel as though I have barely begun to discover the depth of creative work being done in our region," she said.

"Come to Your Summer Senses," a fund-rasing event to support the gallery, will be held in conjunction with the Regional Exhibition Saturday, June 21. Beginning at 10 a.m., ticket holders will be able to tour artists' studios, attend a reception for artist Walter Piehls and attend a formal reception with food, wine, music and art in the evening.

The University Art Gallery serves as an academic environment for the exhibition, contemplation, study and critical analysis of works of art and seeks to actively involve the university and regional communities with the issues and challenges raised by visual arts. The gallery also seeks to collect and preserve a permanent collection of contemporary visual works of art that support the art department's teaching needs and the university. The gallery brings a variety of educational programming relevant to the exhibitions and collections that establish the importance and significance of the visual arts to human values.
