NMSU receives national award for I-10 'Smart Bridge'

New Mexico State University has received a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Highway Quality Award for the innovative design of the Interstate 10 bridge over University Avenue in Las Cruces. The award was presented April 1 at the Spring Highway Conference at the Las Cruces Hilton.

bridge contains fiber-optic sensors that allow engineers to monitor the safety of the bridge so they are able to address problems before they become serious and costly.

"I am very happy with the way the research is going," said Rola Idriss, a civil engineering professor who is leading the "smart bridge" research. "We're getting very important information about the bridge, its design and materials that is relayed to the (New Mexico) Department of Transportation."

Jimmy Camp, NMDOT state bridge engineer, also is proud of the award. "It is now quite a privilege to be involved in this bridge replacement project," he said. "The new bridges are major improvements that are well-designed and aesthetically appealing."

Albuquerque Underground Inc., Parson's Brinkerhoff and the New Mexico Department of Transportation also received the award for their part in constructing the bridge.
