New Mexico State Choirs to present final concert of 2001-2002 season

The New Mexico State University Choirs will present their final concert of the 2001-2002 season at 8 p.m. Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, in the New Mexico State Music Center Recital Hall.

New Mexico State faculty member and baritone John Linford will assist the choirs at "A Psalm Will Rise."

cert, titled "A Psalm Will Rise," will showcase two works. The first piece will be "The Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps," arranged by Donald McCullough. These songs were originally written in Polish by prisoners in Nazi concentration camps and were discovered in the archives of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., in 1998. The songs in the cantata are interspersed with readings based on historical and personal stories. Jon Linford, baritone, Michael Staehle, cello, and Cathy Carver, piano, will assist the New Mexico State Choirs under director Jerry Ann Alt.

The program will conclude with Leonard Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms." Bernstein took several psalms popular in both the Jewish and Christian faiths and put them together in this piece. "Chichester Psalms" has innovative rhythms, harmonies and melody lines in Hebrew. Rabbi Gerald Kane from Temple Beth El in Las Cruces assisted the New Mexico State Choirs with the Hebrew text. Organist Janet Loman will accompany "Chichester Psalms."

Tickets for "A Psalm Will Rise" are $8, $10 and $12. For more information, reservations or tickets call (505) 646-1993.
