An opening reception will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 25. Ocepek will give remarks at 3:30.

"We are glad to offer this new intimate art space for the university and community," Eamon said. "We think it will give students a gallery experience and become an avenue for learning as the artists and students interact. It will be a valuable cultural experience for the students."

Ocepek, who has taught graphic design at New Mexico State for 17 years, was head of the university's art department from 1988 to 1994. He is a widely recognized artist who has had 12 solo exhibitions and been part of 60 national and international exhibitions. In May 2001, he received the Westhafer Award, the university's highest academic award. Since 1988, he has designed covers, art supplements and limited edition prints for New Mexico State's national literary journal, "Puerto del Sol."

Eamon said the Honors Program plans to present three exhibitions a year in the gallery. He said the idea is to expose students to contemporary art. The exhibits will focus on local, regional and student art. For each exhibit an opening reception and artist talk will be presented.

The gallery was made possible by a donation from Wells Fargo Bank. It is located on the second floor of the new Conroy Honors Center at the corner of Espina Street and University Avenue. It is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
