Students to participate in Pre-freshman Engineering Program

New Mexico State University will host 145 middle and high school students from the Las Cruces, Gadsden and Hatch districts for the Pre-freshman Engineering Program (PREP) June 9 to July 25.

gram was designed to encourage students' interest in the sciences and give them the tools to succeed at the university level.

"We try to find students interested in math, science and engineering and give them a more advanced education than they would get in their schools," said Richard Fischer, program director. "We want to keep them on education tracks in those fields while letting them see what college life is like."

Students will attend classes from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. In the morning, students will listen to career awareness speakers from different industries and work on advancing their math skills.

In the afternoons, students will do library research and work on engineering and computer science projects. First-year PREP students will build model rockets, second-year students will build solar-powered model cars and third-year students will develop an experiment to fly in a high altitude balloon.

On Fridays, students will take field trips visiting locations such as White Sands Missile Range, Holloman Air Force Base, the Space Museum, the National Solar Observatory, the Intel Corp. and a wastewater treatment plant.

Students can participate in PREP free for three years. PREP, a nationwide program, is in its seventh year at New Mexico State. It is sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Intel, Hewlett and Jerome and Joyce Cutler Shaw foundations. Contributions from the New Mexico Summer Food Service Program will provide the students with free lunch.

Registration for PREP is usually in February and registration for this year's program is closed. For more information on the program, contact the PREP office at (505) 646-3130.
