La Sociedad para las Artes features writing of local children

La Sociedad para las Artes Visiting Author Series will end the spring semester in celebration of youthful creativity with a Writers in the Schools reading at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in New Mexico State University's Hardman Hall Room 106.

993, La Sociedad para las Artes has sponsored a Writers in the Schools outreach program in the Las Cruces area elementary and middle schools. The program places current creative writing graduate students in the public schools to teach poetry and fiction to the children.

Approximately 300 elementary and middle school students participate in the program and all will be invited to read from their work. The reading is free and open to the public.

Annmarie Borucki, a graduate student coordinator for La Sociedad, said the outreach program is meant to encourage teachers to continue teaching poetry and fiction during the times when no graduate student writers are present.

"We're providing a service to the Las Cruces school district in hope that students will encounter poetry and fiction and that teachers will see it's not a scary thing to teach," Borucki said.
