-Angulo will be presented the award at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, in a ceremony in the Dona Ana Room of New Mexico State's Corbett Center.

Ramirez-Angulo is an outstanding researcher in the field of analog and mixed signal very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuit design, an area which has become increasingly important with the growth and development of wireless communications technology, said Steve Castillo, head of New Mexico State's Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

With the growth of personal computers, most universities have concentrated their research efforts on digital circuits. As a result, only a few researchers have the expertise to develop and improve analog circuits, which, among other applications, amplify and filter signals for use in wireless communications, Castillo explained.

"New Mexico State University is now a leader in this area, thanks to Dr. Ramirez-Angulo," he said.

In addition, Ramirez-Angulo has maintained close contact with universities in Mexico and Spain and has brought students and researchers from those countries to the New Mexico State campus, he added.

The Westhafer Award is named for Robert L. Westhafer, a New Mexico State professor of mathematics who died in 1957. The award, which includes a $3,000 cash prize, has been presented each year since 1958. It is presented in alternate years for excellence in teaching and excellence in research and creative activity.
