New Mexico State University librarian receives Library Association award

New Mexico State University librarian Karen Stabler received the New Mexico Library Community Achievement Award at a recent conference of the New Mexico Library Association (NMLA) in Las Cruces.

Stabler, head of the Access Services Department, has been a librarian for 34 years. She has focused her career on access to information through interlibrary loan and document delivery and to improving service by the use of emerging technologies.

She has published articles and conducted workshops in her field. Stabler also has conducted many grant-funded projects, especially in the area of Mexican librarian exchange programs.

She has served as an officer for New Mexico Academic and Research Librarians and the Library Services Alliance of New Mexico and has chaired several NMLA committees.

Other awards given at the conference included the New Mexico Library Leadership Award to Kathryn Sherlock of Santa Fe, Legislator of the Year to Sen. Ben D. Altamirano of Silver City, New Mexico Library Amigo to Karen Hack of Los Alamos, Honorary Life Membership to Paul A. Agriesti of Santa Fe, Outstanding Secondary School Library to Gallup High School, Outstanding Primary School Library to Monte Vista Elementary School of Albuquerque, Marion Dorroh Memorial Scholarship to Linda Heckes of Albuquerque, College Scholarship to Cinthia Calderon of Sunland Park, and the Continuing Education Grant to Vaunda Nelson of Rio Rancho.
