NMSU canoe team heads to nationals

Nine students from the American Society of Civil Engineers at New Mexico State University will head to Philadelphia to compete at the National Concrete Canoe Competition June 20-22.

s Mandy White, David Serrano, Scott Burns, Pearl Salazar, Ashley Wilson, Seth Johnson, Shane Gill, Mike Baca and Mari Davila will be competing.

Competitors will have to write a formal paper, make a presentation and then race in five canoe races including the two-man 200-meter race sprint, two-woman 200-meter sprint, two-man 600-meter slalom, two-woman 600-meter slalom and the four-person 200-meter coed sprint.

"We are really excited, but it makes you kind of nervous since we haven't been (to nationals) since 1992," said White, a senior civil engineering major. "We are hoping to do well ... hoping to win some races, but we don't expect to compete on the level of first place just because we don't feel we are there yet, but we have been working really hard to give people a run for their money."

The NMSU team placed first in the Rio Grande Competition on April 26 at Caballo Lake beating out the University of Texas-El Paso and the University of New Mexico.

The team will be back in Las Cruces on Tuesday, June 24.
