To the New Mexico State University community:

As most of you know by now, from news reports and university announcements, I have been selected as the finalist for the position of chancellor of the University of Houston System and president of the University of Houston. Under Texas law, there is a 21-day waiting period before this can be confirmed and finalized, but barring the unexpected, Susie and I are looking forward to accepting this new opportunity and challenge.

In the meantime, I will be working with our Regents as they begin planning for a transition. I will be meeting with legislators all over the state of New Mexico next week, talking with them about New Mexico State University, as I had planned to do before the events of the past few days. I will be at the Board of Regents' retreat later this month, with other university administrators, as goals are set for the coming year.

After the Board of Regents has had a chance to meet, which will probably happen next week, the specifics and timing of a transition will begin to come together. The current chancellor/president of the University of Houston is retiring September 1. My feeling is that both universities will be best served if I am in Houston and an interim president is in place here before the opening of the 2003-2004 academic year, and that will be my recommendation. I expect the Board of Regents will want to move fairly quickly to decide how the search for a permanent successor will be conducted.

I want to tell all of you -- and I hope to have a chance to tell many of you in person -- how much Susie and I have enjoyed our three years at New Mexico State University, and how much we appreciate all your efforts on behalf of the university. This is a great institution, with outstanding faculty, staff and students. I hope we have helped to make it even better. I know the administrative team is strong and capable of continuing to move the university forward.

I still have a lot of work to do as president of New Mexico State University, and I promise you that is where my energies are focused now. But this does seem like an appropriate time for me to say to all of you: Thank you for giving me the privilege of serving as your president.

Jay Gogue
President
