New Mexico State University Communications receives state and national awards

The communications office at New Mexico State University received seven national awards from the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) and 21 state awards from New Mexico Press Women (NMPW).


NFPW Communications Contest, University Communications received two first-place awards in photography, two first-place awards in publications, one second-place award in photography, one third-place award in television and one honorable mention in publications.

All entries in the national NFPW contest had been awarded first place at the state level. The office won more state awards than any other participating institution and placed first in the organization sweepstakes in the NMPW competition.

In the state competition, the office received three first-place awards, two second-place awards, one third-place award and two honorable mentions in print, Web and electronic publishing categories for photography. All photographs were taken by Darren Phillips, who placed second in the individual sweepstakes for the state.

In addition, University Communications received four first-place awards, two second-place awards and two honorable mentions for publications such as brochures, newsletters, magazines, reports and posters. Office staff Ronnie Garver, Duncan Hayse, Julie Hughes, Gerald Rel, Bernadette Smyth and former staff member Heather Feldman contributed to the publications.

The office also received one first-place award for television commercials. Hughes, former staff members Rita Popp and Nena Singleton and the Agricultural Communications Video Unit contributed to the commercials.

Hughes also received second place for a news release titled "Parents need to be aware of vaccine shortages."
