Las Sociedad para las Artes sponsors hunger benefit

Published author Brady Udall and poet Lisa D. Chavez will be featured in New Mexico State University's La Sociedad para las Artes 11th annual hunger benefit to raise money for Casa de Peregrinos at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the Mesilla Community Center.

edad has raised almost $40,000 in the past 11 years for Casa de Peregrinos, a local charity offering hot meals and other services to people in need.

Udall is the author of "The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint," which has won numerous awards and has been translated into 18 languages. He is also the author of "Letting Loose the Hounds."

Chavez is a professor at the University of New Mexico and is the author of "Destruction Bay" and "In an Angry Season." Her poems have been published in the Americas Review, Colorado Review and in anthologies such as "American Poetry: The Next Generation" and "The Floating Borderlands: 25 years of U.S. Hispanic Literature."

The Mesilla Community Center is located at 2251 Calle de Santiago in Mesilla. Tickets for the event are $12 and include admission to the reception following the event. The reception will be hosted by The Bean on Avenida de Mesilla and will feature music from Bayou Seco. Tickets can be purchased at The Bean, the NMSU English Department or at the door.
