NMSU schedules power outage for maintenance during winter break

Electrical service on the New Mexico State University campus will be interrupted on Dec. 27 and 28 for maintenance of switching equipment and controls at the university's Tortugas substation.

cRorie, director of facilities operation, said the maintenance work was scheduled for the weekend between Christmas and New Year's, during the university's winter break, to minimize the impact of the power outage.

Nearly all the electricity the university buys from El Paso Electric Co. is delivered through the Tortugas substation. The substation will have to be shut down for required maintenance and preventive service.

Because the university generates some of its own electricity, "we can be somewhat selective about maintaining power to some buildings," MacRorie said.

However, the university's generating capacity is not sufficient to serve the entire campus, even during the holiday setback mode, so most campus buildings on the main campus, including Dona Ana Branch Community College, will be without power during the shutdown.

The outage is scheduled for 6 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, through 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28. If necessary to prevent freezing conditions in buildings, power may be restored during the night and then switched off again Sunday morning to complete the maintenance work.

Campuswide voice telephone service will remain in operation.

Available power will be switched during the weekend to maintain service to selected facilities where significant activities are scheduled or where electricity is critical, MacRorie said. These facilities will experience brief power interruptions, about five to 20 minutes, during the switching.

Because all buildings will experience at least brief interruptions, users are encouraged to turn off or disconnect lights and electronic devices such as computers and laboratory equipment before leaving for the holiday break.

Buildings to which power will be maintained during the scheduled outage, except for brief interruptions during switching, are: the campus police department and fire station, Married Student Housing (Sutherland, Cole, Tom Fort Village), Vista del Monte Apartments, Aggie Convenience Store, Student Health Center, Computer Center, Central Utility Plant, Small Animal Care Facility, Academic Research complex, Plant Genetics Engineering Laboratory, Wind Tunnel Building (east section), Pan American Center, Physical Science Laboratory, Foster Hall, Milton Hall, Chemistry Building, Gerald Thomas Hall, Knox Hall and Skeen Hall.
