Public service careers showcased at New Mexico State University

New Mexico State University will host a Public Service Career Showcase from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in the Corbett Center Ballrooms.

wcase will include federal, state, municipal and non-profit agencies. Some of this year's participating agencies are the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Internal Revenue Service.

This year, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is co-sponsoring the event as part of its "Call to Public Service." The goals of OPM's "Call to Public Service" are to create a public awareness of career opportunities in the federal government and encourage prospective candidates to apply for them.

About 50 percent of the federal government's workforce will be eligible for retirement in five years and many new employees will be needed soon, said Associate Director of Placement and Career Services George Barton.

OPM will present workshops during the showcase, covering such topics as resume writing and how to apply with the federal government and be successful. A candidate assessment center and computers with Internet access also will be available.

"Some employers are able to give job offers on the spot," Barton said. "They can have prospective employees use the computers to fill out an application form online."

NMSU has invited students from the University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso Community College, Sul Ross State University, Western New Mexico University and NMSU's branch colleges to participate in the showcase.

Last year's Public Service Career Showcase drew 42 agencies and Barton hopes for a larger employer pool this year.

"So far, there are about 44 agencies registered. I hope we'll have around 60 to 70 agencies participating this year," Barton said.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing a $3,200 grant to help transport interested students from southern New Mexico and west Texas to the Public Service Career Showcase.

NMSU is one of the 12 recruitment sites OPM chose to sponsor a federal employment fair. Other sites are located in Albuquerque, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Antonio, Denver, Detroit, Miami, New York, Tucson, Ariz., and Kansas City, Mo.

The showcase is open to the public. For more information or a full listing of participating agencies, call Placement and Career Services at (505) 646-4711 or go to www.nmsu.edu/pment.
