New NMSU student organization to hold Fiesta de Carnaval

New Mexico State University's student organization Capoeira de Las Cruces will host Fiesta de Carnaval at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, in the Corbett Center Auditorium.

de Carnaval will feature Samba Malandragem and Capoiera Quinto Sol. Samba is an Afro-Brazilian ballroom dance and capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art form that combines martial arts and dance.

Other groups performing at Fiesta de Carnaval are New World Drummers, Ballet Folklorico, Kung Fu Fighters, Suhaila al Fraheen and belly dancers, Guava Jam and flamenco and salsa dancers from NMSU's dance program.

"This is the first presentation we are doing as an organization, but we hope to make it an annual event," said Eduardo Galvan, president of Capoeira de Las Cruces.

Capoeira de Las Cruces officially became a chartered university student organization in January 2003. The purpose of the group is to promote cultural diversity through music, dance and performing arts. The group works to get people interested in performing arts careers and gives them opportunities to perform and see others perform.
