Award-winning author Lex Williford will be the first writer featured in the La Sociedad para las Artes Fall 2001 Visiting Author Series Friday, Sept. 14.

Williford's book "Macauley's Thumb" was co-winner of the 1993 Iowa School of Letters Award for Short Fiction.

His fiction and nonfiction works have appeared in numerous publications, and he has taught in the writing programs at Southern Illinois University, the University of Alabama and the University of Texas at El Paso.

For 22 years, La Sociedad para las Artes has brought well-known local and national writers to Las Cruces for public readings of poetry, fiction and essays. The annual reading series offers students, faculty and the community the opportunity to experience fiction and poetry writers firsthand.

La Sociedad offers community service opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students at New Mexico State. Graduate students are frequently featured at the readings and read from their master's thesis before the featured author.

La Sociedad will present six readings this fall. Mary Leader will be featured Sept. 28, Alexander Parsons will be featured Oct. 19, with graduate student Rus Bradburd opening for him, and Michael Martone will be featured Oct. 26, with graduate student JodiAnn Hathaway opening for him. These readings will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Hardman Hall Room 106.

The Share Our Strength Writer's Harvest reading, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Court Youth Center, will benefit the local hunger organization Casa de Peregrinos.

The reading will feature New Mexico State poetry Professor Connie Voisine, and University of Texas at El Paso fiction Professor Daniel Chacon.

The semester's final reading, Writers in the Schools, will feature Las Cruces elementary school students and will be held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in Hardman Hall Room 106.

The readings are free and open to the public, with the exception of the Share Our Strength Writer's Harvest reading. Tickets for this event are $12 and may be purchased from the English department.
