The Fulbright program, funded by the U.S. Department of State, pays for recipients to lecture and research in more than 130 countries. Awards range from two months to a full academic year.

Dillon will study and teach at the University of Saarlandes in Saarbruecken, Germany, from February to August 2002.

"As a director and someone who teaches European drama, I decided I needed to learn more about current European plays and production practices," Dillon said. "In addition to conducting this research, I will be teaching a course on American drama while I am at the university in Saarbuecken."

Dillon has taught courses in acting, directing, Shakespeare and modern European and American dramatic literature at New Mexico State for seven years. She has directed 14 plays and served as artistic director for the American Southwest Theater Company. She will direct an American play while she is at the German university.

Dillon, who said she has not been to Europe since she was a child, will start her trip by spending four weeks in Dresden, Germany, where she will take an intensive language course at the Goethe Institute of Language.

Prior to leaving for Germany, Dillon will spend the fall in New York. She will guest direct Shakespeare's "As You Like It" at Wagner College on Staten Island and collaborate with playwright s.a. cavanaugh on the production of an original showcase.

The Fulbright program, established in 1946, is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those in other countries.
