Campus executive officer selected for NMSU-Carlsbad

Melvin M. Vuk of Carlsbad has accepted the position of campus executive officer at New Mexico State University at Carlsbad. His starting date is July 2.

997 Vuk has been director of the Carlsbad campus of the College of the Southwest. He previously was an associate professor of social sciences and global studies at New Mexico State University at Carlsbad.

Vuk also has taught and held administrative positions at the Defense Intelligence College in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado.

He earned a doctorate in geography at Oregon State University and master's and bachelor's degrees in geography at the University of Illinois.

"We are pleased to have someone with Dr. Vuk's academic and administrative skills joining us as the chief executive officer of the Carlsbad campus," said Lynford Ames, New Mexico State's interim associate vice president for community colleges and distance education. "His experience at the branch campus and his knowledge of the community were important factors."

Vuk's selection followed a national search that began last fall. A 12-person search committee included representatives of the university's administration, faculty, staff, students and the community.

NMSU-Carlsbad is one of four New Mexico State University branch campuses. The others are the Dona Ana Branch Community College in Las Cruces, NMSU-Alamogordo and NMSU-Grants. Total enrollment at the main and branch campuses is about 23,000 students.
