Las Cruces PREP launches students into the next millennium at NMSU

The Las Cruces Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) is accepting applications for its 1999 session to be held June 14 through Aug. 6 on the New Mexico State University campus. The deadline for applications is March 1.

The eight-week summer PREP program is designed to academically prepare middle and high school students for careers in mathematics, science and engineering. Although PREP is targeted to high-achieving low income and minority students, it is open to all.

Participants may begin the PREP program as early as sixth grade and attend for three years prior to college. While first year participants are instructed in logic, engineering and computer science, second year participants study algebraic structures and introduction to physics. Third year participants are introduced to technical writing and probability and statistics, and all students participate in a problem-solving course to advance their mathematics skills.

PREP participants also experience a wide variety of hands-on activities and other events, such as visits to NMSU's Colleges of Agriculture and Engineering, Friday field trips and the annual rocket launch.

PREP is primarily funded through a NASA grant to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. Called "Proyecto Access," the grant in turn funds nine universities throughout the country to host PREP programs at no cost to participants. NMSU's 1999 Proyecto Access grant is $80,000. NMSU also has received $39,000 from the Intel Corporation. In recognition of the gift, this year's rocket launch will be named "Intel's Rocket Launch Into the Next Millennium." PREP also expects to provide lunch for all participants through the Summer Food Service Program.

Academic requirements for PREP students include an 80 percent overall average, as well as specific requirements in math, science and English courses. High school juniors and seniors are not eligible to participate in first year PREP.

For more information about attending PREP, contact Alyne Fulte, NMSU mathematics instructor and Las Cruces PREP director, at (505) 646-5067 or via e-mail at prep@nmsu.edu.
