ASNMSU to sponsor the Big Even

The Associated Students of New Mexico State University, the university's student government, will sponsor its Second Annual Big Event at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 12.

The Big Event is a campuswide community service project sponsored by ASNMSU with the United Way. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate, assisting more than 20 local agencies with projects involving painting, building, cleaning and other activities. Participants will receive T-shirts.

Maggie Casmus, ASNMSU community outreach director, said the day is dedicated to giving something back to the community.

"This is our way of saying 'thank you' for all of the things the community of Las Cruces has done for the university," Casmus said.

Last year, NMSU sent more than 150 students into the community to help. This year, sponsors hope to double that number.

"It's a great way for students to meet other students, go out and get their hands dirty and help people," Casmus said.

The Big Event was started in 1982 by Texas A&M University. Since then it has become the largest single-day, student-run service project in the nation with students from more than 71 universities participating in the program.

Students, faculty and staff who are interested in participating can register online at http://www.asnmsu.nmsu.edu or can stop by the ASNMSU office to pick up a registration form.
