NMSU's literary anthology provides unique insight from New Mexico senior citizens

New Mexico State University's 17th edition of "Serape: An Anthology of New Mexico Authors," presents an unparalleled collection of poetry, fiction and nonfiction by New Mexico authors ages 55 and older, said New Mexico State University English professor Kevin McIlvoy.

, who co-edits "Serape," said the anthology is a wonderful way to spotlight older authors who like to share their many life experiences.

The idea for the anthology began with a writing class McIlvoy has been teaching at the Munson Senior Center in Las Cruces for 21 years and soon grew to include authors from the community and around the state.

"Their work is so uniquely powerful and eloquent, it seems unfair not to share it with others," McIlvoy said.

The anthology features 40 writers from various cities within the state, including Albuquerque, Deming, Las Cruces, Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Silver City. Twenty-three Las Cruces residents contributed to the anthology.

Las Cruces authors include Jane Abreu, Valerie Baca, Dorothy Best, Kay Byrd, Sandra Eisdorfer, Eloise S. Evans, Marilyn Gioannini, Ruth Martin Hall, Elizabeth Hamel, Mildred Harkey, Frances Hawkinson, Oren Hays, Win Jacobs, J.E. Knott, Ronald Lautenbach, Al Lieberman, Kay Nation, Marie Reilly, Joseph Saldana, Linda Sanchez, Wanda Skowlund, Mary Jane Wood and Ara Janelle Woodward.

The editors of "Serape" include McIlvoy, Kathryn Byrd, Kathryn St. Thomas and Mary Jane Wood. Anthology photos were taken by Susan Gomez of Las Cruces.
