Philosopher to discuss 'The Matrix as Metaphysics'

Renowned philosopher David Chalmers, director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona, will discuss "The Matrix as Metaphysics" at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in Hardman Hall Room 104 at New Mexico State University.

k, which is open to the public, is sponsored by the NMSU Department of Philosophy.

Chalmers, whose work focuses on the philosophy of the mind and related areas of philosophy and cognitive science, is the author of "The Conscious Mind."

The "Matrix" movies present a modern version of an old philosophical fable. Could one be deceived into radically false beliefs about reality? Could we be inhabiting a version of the matrix ourselves?

Chalmers will suggest a different perspective on "The Matrix": Even if we inhabit a matrix, our beliefs about the world are still mostly true. "The Matrix" provides a new metaphysics for reality.
