Brown will receive the $2,000 award from New Mexico State Interim President William Flores at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, in the New Mexico Room of the Corbett Center Student Union.

She was nominated by her staff at the Center for Learning Assistance, who said she has been an outstanding contributor to the NMSU community during her 28 years of serving the academic needs of students at NMSU.

"Sue has strived to develop courses and outreach programs that have far exceeded the scope of her professional responsibilities," staff members said in their nomination letter. "Sue has recognized the importance of seeking and attaining external funding to supplement services for students via various outreach programs. As a direct result of her proposal writing efforts, NMSU has been the recipient of millions of dollars in grants."

In addition to serving as the director of the Center for Learning Assistance, Brown also serves as the director of the Ronald E. McNair Program and the Athletics Academic Program. She supervises the Upward Bound and Student Support Services programs. Brown is responsible for the administration or supervision of five units, 18 staff members and oversees a combined budget of more than $1 million.

"Sue's philosophy that all students have the opportunity to succeed is what drives her daily to serve the university in ways that far exceed the requirements of her job," said Tara Gray, director of the university's Teaching Academy, who also supported Brown's nomination.

The award is named in honor of Ralph B. Crouch, a former head of the university's mathematics department and former associate dean of the graduate school. It is given each year to a current or living former New Mexico State employee who has made an outstanding contribution to the university community.
