NMSU comes in first in concrete canoe competition, qualifies for nationals

New Mexico State University's American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) student chapter placed first in the concrete canoe competition during the Rocky Mountain Regional ASCE Student Conference recently held at Colorado State University.

institutions from New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota participated in the conference that included five competitions: steel bridge building, pre-design, concrete canoe, and writing technical and non-technical papers.

Overall, NMSU scored more than 700 points out of a possible 1,000, won 11 plaques and a championship trophy.

The canoe team advances to national competition that will be held in Washington, D.C., this June.

"It feels so great to win (the regional competition) and have a chance to go to nationals and represent New Mexico and the Rocky Mountain region," said Ashleigh Wilson, co-captain of the 2004 concrete canoe team. "Nationals consist of the top 25 schools in the nation and a couple from Canada so I know there will be some tough competition."
