NMSU professor receives fellowship to teach in Brazil

New Mexico State University professor of languages and linguistics Jesus Barquet recently received a $22,500 Rotary Fellowship to teach Latin American literature in Brazil starting in January 2005.

lowship will allow Barquet to teach at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) for eight months. He had previously taught at USP for one semester in 2000 on a Rotary Fellowship. In both cases, Barquet received invitations to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and supervise graduate research at USP.

In 2003, Barquet published "Haz de incitaciones," a compilation of Cuban artist and poet testimonies of their work. He published an anthology of Cuban poetry titled "Poesia cubana del siglo XX" and a literary criticism titled "Teatro y revolucion cubana," in Mexico in 2002.

As a contributing editor of Puerto del Sol, a literary and fine arts journal published by the Master of Fine Arts program at NMSU, Barquet has published "The Island Odyssey," a supplement on Cuban poetry. His work in the next issue of Puerto del Sol will feature Hispanic and Brazilian poets in "Cross Pollination."

Barquet teaches Latin American and U.S. Hispanic literature at NMSU.
