Her book, "Listening to Our Grandmothers' Stories: The Bloomfield Academy for Chickasaw Females, 1852-1949," deals with the establishment of the Bloomfield Academy in 1852 by missionaries and the Chickasaw Tribe.

The American Book Awards were established in 1978 by the Before Columbus Foundation to acknowledge the excellence and multi-cultural diversity of American writing. Cobb will be presented her award at a ceremony and reception to be held on Friday, June 1, at the Continental Room at the Chicago Athletic Association in Chicago.
